GEO in 2026: How to Get Your Brand Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini & Google AI Overviews

Search is now part conversation. Here is the practical playbook we use to get brands referenced inside AI answers — without abandoning classic SEO.

For twenty years, “ranking” meant one thing: a position in Google’s ten blue links. In 2026, a growing share of buyers never see those links. They ask ChatGPT for “the best influencer agency in Mumbai”, read a Google AI Overview, or get a Perplexity summary with three cited sources. If your brand is not one of those sources, you are invisible at the exact moment a decision is made.

That is what Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) solves. It is not a replacement for SEO — it is SEO’s next layer.

How AI engines decide whom to quote

Large language models answering with live search do three things: retrieve candidate pages, judge which ones are trustworthy and specific, and synthesise an answer that cites a few of them. Pages that get cited tend to share the same traits:

  • Clear entities. The engine can tell exactly who you are, what you do and where — consistent name, address, services and founders across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  • Direct answers. A question in a heading, followed immediately by a concise, factual answer. Engines love extractable passages.
  • Original information. First-party data, benchmarks, pricing ranges, frameworks with names. If your page says what fifty others say, there is no reason to cite you.
  • Third-party corroboration. Mentions in news, industry lists, podcasts, Reddit and review platforms confirm you are real and relevant.

The 7-step GEO playbook

1. Fix your entity foundation

Add Organization and LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to every official profile. Make sure your brand description is identical everywhere. This hub, for example, publishes one Organization graph on every page so engines never have to guess.

2. Publish an llms.txt

An /llms.txt file gives AI crawlers a clean, human-readable summary of your site and its most important pages. It is lightweight to create and increasingly read by AI tooling.

3. Write for questions, not just keywords

Collect the actual questions customers ask on sales calls and WhatsApp. Turn each into an H2 or FAQ with a 40–60 word direct answer, then expand below. Mark them up with FAQPage schema.

4. Add information gain

Every important page should contain something only you can say: campaign results, process frameworks, price ranges, comparison tables, or a free tool. Our ROAS calculator and engagement rate calculator exist partly for this reason.

5. Earn corroborating mentions

Digital PR, expert quotes in publications, podcast appearances, partner pages and “best agencies” lists. Engines weigh what others say about you more heavily than what you say about yourself.

6. Keep content fresh and dated

Show visible “last updated” dates and genuinely refresh statistics. AI answers skew toward recent sources for anything time-sensitive.

7. Track AI visibility

Every month, run a fixed set of buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Record whether you are mentioned, cited or recommended — and which competitors are. That becomes your GEO share-of-voice metric.

Does classic SEO still matter?

More than ever. AI engines retrieve from the open web, and pages that rank well are far more likely to be retrieved in the first place. Technical health, Core Web Vitals, internal linking and helpful content remain the base of the pyramid. GEO simply adds structure and authority on top.

Where to start this week

Pick your five most valuable service pages. Add a clear FAQ block to each, validate your schema, and ask ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your buyers ask. You will know within minutes where you stand — and what to fix first.
