How engagement rate is calculated
The most common formula is (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100, averaged across recent posts. When you have access to insights, engagement by reach — interactions divided by accounts reached — is more accurate because it reflects the people who actually saw the content.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Benchmarks vary by account size. Smaller accounts usually see higher engagement because their communities are tighter. As a rough guide: nano creators (under 10K) often sit between 3–6%, micro creators (10K–100K) between 1.5–3.5%, and macro accounts (100K+) between 0.8–2%. Anything far above the band deserves a closer look for engagement pods or giveaways.
Why brands should care
Follower count tells you potential reach; engagement tells you attention. When we match creators from our 5,000+ network, we weight engagement quality, audience location and comment authenticity far more than raw followers.
