Core Web Vitals in Plain English: Make Your Website Fast, Rank Higher, Sell More
LCP, INP and CLS explained without jargon — and the fixes that move the needle on real Indian mobile networks.
Most of your visitors arrive on a mid-range Android phone over a mobile network. If your website feels slow there, it does not matter how good it looks on an office MacBook. Google measures this real-world experience with three metrics called Core Web Vitals.
LCP — Largest Contentful Paint
What it means: how long until the main content (usually the hero image or headline) appears. Good: under 2.5 seconds.
Fixes: compress and resize hero images, serve WebP or AVIF, preload the hero image, use a CDN, and avoid render-blocking scripts in the head.
INP — Interaction to Next Paint
What it means: how quickly the page responds when someone taps a button or opens a menu. Good: under 200 milliseconds.
Fixes: remove unused JavaScript, defer third-party scripts like chat widgets and heavy trackers, and break long tasks into smaller ones.
CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift
What it means: how much the page jumps around while loading. Good: under 0.1.
Fixes: set width and height on images and videos, reserve space for ads and embeds, and use font-display: swap with similar fallback fonts.
Can a site be animated and fast?
Yes — this very hub uses smooth scrolling, split-text reveals, a canvas hero and scroll-triggered motion. The trick is animating only transform and opacity, loading animation libraries deferred, respecting reduced-motion preferences and never blocking the first paint.
How to check your site
Run PageSpeed Insights for real-user field data, then Lighthouse for lab diagnostics. Fix the biggest opportunity first, re-test, repeat. Small, steady improvements add up to higher rankings and noticeably better conversion rates.
